Rain in Ann Arbor, Michigan—one of the American university cities where Saito exhibited and taught during his US periods—shows him applying the same formal attention to American rain that he brought to Parisian and Japanese rain. Wet pavement, blurred reflections, the particular quality of light filtered through overcast sky were subjects he found as compelling in the Midwest as in Kyoto. The Ann Arbor rain print would show his geometric reduction of North American architectural environments.
