The 1955 Rain, Paris (A) is among Saito's most distinctive international works—the first or primary version of what may have been a small series of Paris rain compositions. Rain transformed the city's stone and iron surfaces into reflective planes perfectly suited to his flat-plane approach: the wet Boulevard Saint-Germain or the Marais cobblestones becoming abstract fields of color, the reflected street lamps geometric points of light in a dark ground.
