Teahouse, ocha

The Japanese teahouse—chashitsu—embodies centuries of aesthetic philosophy compressed into a few small rooms: rough plaster walls, unpolished timber posts, a roof that barely clears the garden. Saito was drawn to this architecture for its absolute denial of ornament, its insistence that meaning lives in proportion and material rather than decoration. His ocha teahouse prints render these qualities through the woodblock medium's own inherent flatness, treating the humble structure with the same formal gravity he gave to great temples.
