Toriemoto in Kyoto—a neighborhood near Sagano notable for its atmospheric old streets of machiya townhouses—became a subject for Saito in 1971, one of the later additions to his Kyoto topography. By this point the old Kyoto streetscape was under significant pressure from modernization, and his documentation of quiet traditional neighborhoods carries an implicit preservation impulse alongside the formal investigation. The tiled roofs and latticed facades of Toriemoto suited his geometric approach perfectly.
