Description
The sutra repository—kyozo—of a Buddhist temple houses the written scriptures that form the intellectual backbone of the tradition, and the building itself often carries an architectural dignity proportional to its contents. Saito's 1963 treatment reduces the treasure-house form to its essential elements: a massive roof, square walls, the deep eave shadow that in Japanese architecture functions as a kind of visual moat separating sacred space from the ordinary world.
