Description
Dated 1933, Railway Bridge depicts the steel infrastructure that was transforming the Japanese landscape during the early Showa period. Railroad construction accelerated dramatically after the Meiji Restoration, and by the 1930s, railway bridges had become ubiquitous features of both urban and rural scenery. Fukazawa treats the bridge not as an eyesore disrupting a pastoral view but as a legitimate subject for the woodblock print medium, its iron trusses and geometric spans offering visual interest comparable to the wooden bridges that Hiroshige and Hokusai had depicted a century earlier. The 1933 date places this print in a period of rapid modernization when Japanese artists were negotiating between tradition and the machine age. The woodblock rendering of industrial steel creates a productive tension between old craft and new subject.
