$300–$2,000. Temple scenes are among the most popular subjects for this artist. Good landscapes: $800–$1,500. Key value factors: Sano's landscape prints are modestly priced and accessible to collectors.
Hiunkaku, a three-story pavilion within Kyoto's Nishi Honganji temple complex, stands under a heavy snowfall that softens its architectural lines and transforms the surrounding garden into a field of white. Sano's 1996 [oban](/glossary/oban) woodblock print captures the building's distinctive silhouette, with its upswept eaves bearing accumulations of snow that emphasize each roofline's curve. The garden pond, partially frozen or covered, reflects muted tones that echo the overcast sky. Hiunkaku is considered one of Kyoto's finest examples of Momoyama-period architecture, and the snowfall strips away the usual garden greenery to reveal the building's structural elegance in isolation. The Japanese title (雪の飛雲閣) names both the weather and the place with compact precision.
