"(Kwannon Goddess)" — an alternate romanization of Kannon, using the older reading "Kwannon" common before mid-twentieth century standardization — captures the compassionate bodhisattva in one of Munakata's many depictions of this figure across his long career (1930–1974 spans the catalogue date range). The alternate title may indicate an earlier or more traditional context for the work. Whatever its specific date, the print would bear the essential Munakata approach to Kannon: not the serene, delicate goddess of traditional Japanese devotional art but a presence of formidable, almost frightening spiritual intensity.
