"Night Wind Over Lake" — ink on paper, dated to the Showa period — captures the Munakata landscape at its most elemental: wind-disturbed water at night, the darkness and movement rendered through the woodblock's capacity for strong tonal contrast. The night wind on a lake surface creates forms that Munakata's carving style could render with particular force: the disturbed water patterns, the darkness pressing in from all sides, the sense of an invisible force moving through a landscape that is otherwise still. The print carries the atmospheric weight of deep night in an open natural setting.
