"The disciple Subodai / Shaka ju dai deshi (Ten Great Followers of Shaka)" from 1939 (designed) is the original carving of the Subhuti/Shubodai subject that Munakata would reprint in later decades in different series contexts. The 1939 carving represents the first encounter with this figure, the initial act of searching for and finding Subhuti's form within the wood. The disciple of emptiness, found in the woodblock's surface — the formless discovered through the act of removal, the carved void revealing what had always been present.
