$1,500–$12,000. Snow and night scenes tend to command premium prices for this artist. Key value factors: Shimura's refined bijin-ga have a devoted collector base. Earlier prints and rarer subjects command premiums.
Snow falls in this [oban](/glossary/oban) woodblock print, transforming the scene into a study of white against the darker tones of a woman's kimono and hair. Shimura Tatsumi uses the winter weather as both setting and aesthetic device, the falling flakes creating a veil between the viewer and the figure that softens edges and muffles the composition's energy. The woman moves through or stands within the snowfall, her warm presence contrasting with the cold precipitation. Shimura's snow scenes belong to a long lineage in Japanese art, but his particular contribution lies in making the weather an emotional as well as atmospheric presence in his [bijin-ga](/glossary/bijin-ga) prints.
