Description
Shinobazu Pond sits at the southwest corner of Ueno Park, with the small island of Bentendo at its center. A misty evening combines three subjects Kasamatsu returned to repeatedly: nocturnal atmosphere, water, and Tokyo topography. The print would rely on extended bokashi gradations across the sky and pond, with mist softening the silhouettes of trees and the distant rooflines of the Bentendo. The palette is likely reduced — blues and greys, with sparing use of warmer tones for any visible lanterns or window-lights. This subject places the print within a recurring vein of Kasamatsu's output, alongside his studies of rain, snow, and dusk that distinguish his work from the brighter daylight scenes of his Kiyokata fellow-student Kawase Hasui.
