Description
Numazu sits on Suruga Bay in Shizuoka Prefecture, with Mt. Fuji visible to the north on clear days. Shizuura is the stretch of coast within the bay. A seascape from this position may include Fuji in the distance — a compositional choice with deep ukiyo-e precedent in Hokusai and Hiroshige — though Kasamatsu typically subordinates Fuji to atmospheric effect rather than treating the mountain as the primary subject. The print likely uses bokashi to grade the sea from foreground to horizon and the sky from horizon to upper edge. Numazu and the Suruga coast were favored locations for shin-hanga landscape artists; Hasui produced several Numazu views, and Kasamatsu's treatment can be read as a parallel response to the same coastline.
