Description
Shinobazu Pond in Ueno — "Shinobazu ike" in Japanese — appears here in one of Kasamatsu's multiple depictions of this beloved Tokyo landmark, the water surface and surrounding landscape captured in a particular seasonal or atmospheric moment. The pond divided into sections for boating, lotus cultivation, and wildlife attracted a wide range of subjects across the year: cherry blossoms in spring, the dense pink lotus in summer, autumn maples, and the skeletal silence of winter. This view focuses on the pond itself as the composition's quiet center.
