Description
Another Tale of Genji subject, here pairing the protagonist Hikaru Genji with Murasaki no Ue, his principal companion and the central female figure across much of the novel. Genji raises Murasaki from childhood after recognizing her resemblance to his late stepmother Fujitsubo, and her presence anchors the long middle section of the tale until her death in chapter forty. Compositions treating this pair typically show them in a private interior—at the koto, beneath flowering trees, or behind a half-drawn standing curtain—with attention given to seasonal markers in the surrounding garden. The technique of Genji-e prints generally involves multiple color blocks for the patterned silk robes and an outline keyblock printed in fine [sumi](/glossary/sumi), with embossing ([karazuri](/glossary/karazuri)) sometimes used on white textile elements. The use of the French Dame in the recorded title suggests transcription from a Western dealer source rather than an original Japanese inscription. The literary subject represents a departure from the landscape and [kacho-e](/glossary/kacho-e) work more commonly associated with Shusui.
