Description
"Boats on Shore near Fuji" presents the iconic silhouette of Mount Fuji behind a coastal scene of beached boats — a composition that connects Japan's mountain iconography to its maritime identity. Kawakami's treatment of Fuji is characteristically less reverent and more affectionate than the grandeur of Hokusai's "Thirty-six Views": Fuji in his work is a landmark rather than an icon, the familiar background to scenes of ordinary Japanese life. The boats in the foreground anchor the composition in the coastal communities that look up at Fuji from below.
