$500–$4,000. Common subjects: $500–$1,500. Key value factors: As an early sosaku-hanga pioneer, Kawakami's prints have historical significance. His distinctive graphic style is collected.
"Torii of Kudan" presents the great stone torii of the Yasukuni Shrine approach in the Kudan district of Tokyo — a landmark Kawakami depicted in multiple works, drawn to its monumental presence and cultural complexity. The torii at Kudan marked the entrance to the shrine precinct from the Kudanshita direction, framing the sacred space with one of the largest torii gates in the city. Kawakami's simplified rendering of its massive form against sky and surrounding cityscape captures both its architectural dominance and its cultural weight.
