Description
A trial proof from 1959, this depiction of rice paddies (ta) represents a rare engagement with Japan's agricultural landscape from an artist primarily associated with urban subjects. The flooded fields' geometric grid — water mirrors bounded by earthen banks — offered Ono a subject that was almost abstract in its formal regularity. The trial-proof status, one of just one, suggests this may have been an experimental departure that did not proceed to full edition.
