Description
Printed in 1957, this early view of Hiroshima's river delta carries a weight that purely formal description cannot fully account for. Twelve years after the atomic bombing, the city's rivers — the seven channels of the Ota flowing into Hiroshima Bay — were still charged with memory and meaning. Ono renders the river with his characteristic directness, the water and banks treated as graphic shapes, but the choice of subject in this year speaks beyond form.
