$200–$1,500. Temple scenes are among the most popular subjects for this artist. Good works: $500–$1,000. Key value factors: Takahashi's prints are modestly priced. Quality examples with strong design are most valued.
A color woodblock print from 1958 depicting a temple gate, one of Takahashi Rikio's earlier works that bridges traditional subject matter with his evolving modern aesthetic. The gate, a threshold between the secular world and sacred space, becomes a study in geometric form: the heavy crossbeams, upright posts, and curved roof reduced to bold shapes and flat color planes. Takahashi strips away the picturesque detail that shin-hanga artists would have lavished on such a subject, instead finding the essential architecture within the structure. The 1958 date places this work early in his mature period, when he was establishing the semiabstract visual language that would define his later career while still working from recognizable architectural sources.
