Shotei's landscapes are his most widely available works. Signed lifetime editions with strong color and condition represent good collector value. Post-earthquake reprints lacking signatures and seals are common and trade at lower prices.
Catalog number M52 shows Hakone Shrine's approach after a snowfall has covered the path, the shrine buildings, and the surrounding forest, the worshippers' footprints in the fresh snow the only marks on an otherwise pristine surface. Hakone Shrine, on the shore of Lake Ashi in the volcanic caldera, was one of the mountain's most important sacred sites, its approach through ancient cedars particularly affecting under fresh snow. The after-snow calm gives the composition a particular purity.
