Shotei produced a wide range of subjects throughout his career under publishers Watanabe and Daikokuya. Signed, sealed lifetime editions consistently outperform unsigned export-market copies.
Catalog number C17 shows Itako — a canal town in Ibaraki Prefecture known for its iris gardens and flat waterway landscape — at night, the canal reflecting the lights of buildings along its banks while the flat fen country extends into darkness. Itako's grid of channels and low-slung wooden bridges made it one of the most distinctive small-town landscapes near Tokyo, and Shotei renders it at the hour when the water becomes a mirror for artificial light. The night treatment amplifies the sense of stillness and isolation that the canal town possessed.
