Shotei produced a wide range of subjects throughout his career under publishers Watanabe and Daikokuya. Signed, sealed lifetime editions consistently outperform unsigned export-market copies.
Catalog number C9 shows the farming village of Mabashi on the eastern outskirts of Edo/Tokyo at night, the cluster of farmhouses and their surrounding trees dark against a sky that may hold moonlight or the glow of the city to the west. Shotei's night scenes of the Tokyo periphery belong to his most intimate and unassuming work — the countryside just beyond the city's edge, quiet at night while the metropolis glows in the near distance. The Mabashi setting places this among the landscapes disappearing beneath Tokyo's expansion.
