Shotei produced a wide range of subjects throughout his career under publishers Watanabe and Daikokuya. Signed, sealed lifetime editions consistently outperform unsigned export-market copies.
A lone cryptomeria stands in sheeting rain beside a simple thatched hut, the great conifer's layered branches each weighed down with accumulated water. Shotei renders the scene through the curtain of rain itself — vertical stripes that soften all edges and reduce the world to the essential contrast between the dark upright trunk and the pale rain-blurred air around it. The subject belongs to Shotei's long engagement with rain as a compositional force, one that allowed the [bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) technique to express the very feel of wet weather.
