Shotei produced a wide range of subjects throughout his career under publishers Watanabe and Daikokuya. Signed, sealed lifetime editions consistently outperform unsigned export-market copies.
Catalog number M6 shows an evening scene at Shinagawa on the southern waterfront of Edo and later Tokyo, the old post town at the start of the Tokaido road rendered in the atmospheric dimming light of dusk. The Shinagawa waterfront had a complex character: it was simultaneously the first stop on Japan's most traveled highway, a fishing harbor, a tea-house district, and the gateway at which the city's daily life connected to the larger world of Tokaido travel. Shotei captures the evening transition at this historically layered place.
