Shotei produced a wide range of subjects throughout his career under publishers Watanabe and Daikokuya. Signed, sealed lifetime editions consistently outperform unsigned export-market copies.
Shinobazu Pond in Ueno on a rainy night — its lotus-covered surface disturbed by falling drops, its island shrine lanterns reflected in broken patterns on the disturbed water — was one of the most quintessentially Tokyo night subjects. Shotei renders the pond's large, dark surface through the curtain of rain, the [bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) treatment deepening the tonal contrasts that rain and lamplight created. The combination of rain, night, and pond surface allowed all three atmospheric effects to reinforce each other.
