Shotei produced a wide range of subjects throughout his career under publishers Watanabe and Daikokuya. Signed, sealed lifetime editions consistently outperform unsigned export-market copies.
A sudden summer shower at Terashima — a district in the eastern lowlands of Tokyo — transforms the street scene without warning, catching residents and visitors in the characteristic instant of scramble that summer storms in Japan produced. Shotei renders the immediate aftermath or onset of the shower: umbrellas going up, figures ducking under eaves, the street surface suddenly darkened by the wet. The summer shower was one of the most emotionally immediate of weather subjects, the urgency of the rain's arrival giving the composition a spontaneity rare in woodblock landscapes.
