愛宕のにわか雨
Pre-1923 Shotei prints are particularly prized because the Great Kanto Earthquake destroyed original woodblocks along with much of the Watanabe publishing house. Surviving pre-earthquake impressions carry a scarcity premium.
A sudden summer rainstorm sweeps across the Atago area, sending pedestrians scurrying for shelter. The diagonal lines of driving rain and the movement of figures bending against the wind create a dynamic composition full of energy and urgency. The dark storm clouds and the silvery sheets of rain transform the familiar urban landscape into a dramatic scene.
