Description
A northern winter — "北方の冬" — is rendered in this composition with the bleakness and bareness that distinguish winter in Japan's northern regions from the more atmospheric, picturesque winters of Kyoto or the Tokai coast. Yumeji made several works depicting the harsh north, and the starkness of those landscapes served as a visual analogy for his most intensely melancholy moods — the cold, the bare branches, the grey sky, the absence of color all corresponding to states of feeling as much as to meteorological facts.
