Description
A temple precinct glimpsed in autumn, its grounds covered with fallen leaves and its structures framed by the fiery canopy of maples and ginkgos. Tanaka uses the season's color — even translated through the restrained palette of woodblock — to evoke the melancholic beauty of temples in autumn, a subject beloved in Japanese art since the Heian period. The quiet emptiness of the scene, its paths unpopulated, intensifies the feeling of sacred solitude.
