$1,000–$6,000. Snow and night scenes tend to command premium prices for this artist. Key value factors: Tanaka's exquisite farmhouse etchings are beloved by collectors worldwide. Since his death in 2019, prices have firmed. Traditional thatched-roof subjects are most popular.
Hatagoh — an inn or lodging house, the term derived from the roadside inns of the Edo period — is depicted in early winter, when bare branches and a dusting of snow mark the season's arrival. Tanaka's 1980 etching renders the structure with the patient attention he brings to all vernacular buildings: the texture of weathered walls, the weight of a heavy roof, the particular quietness of a building between seasons. The inn at this off-peak moment carries a sense of suspended activity.
