Description

This etching depicts the eighth-century temple complex at the heart of Nara, most likely the Daibutsuden (Great Buddha Hall) with its tiled roofs and bracketed timber framework. Tanaka renders the architecture through layered intaglio line, with crosshatching used to model deep eaves and recessed bays. While Tanaka is primarily associated with rural minka rather than civic monuments, his occasional treatments of major temples extend the same documentary attention — careful proportions, weight given to roof tiles and posts, and a sparse atmospheric ground around the structure. The print falls within the Temples & Shrines strand of his catalogue, where the etched line suits the regular geometry of bracket sets and tiled roofs. Like much of his output, the image sits within a small edition pulled from a single copperplate, with consistent plate tone holding the sheet together. The Nara setting places the work among his subjects of historic central Japan rather than the Kyoto countryside that anchored most of his career.
