The bell tower (shoro) of Daitoku-ji — the great Rinzai Zen temple complex in northern Kyoto — is depicted in this 1964 etching and aquatint, one of Tanaka's earliest known works. Daitoku-ji's bell tower is an austere wooden structure of spare architectural elegance, perfectly suited to Tanaka's sensibility.
