The bell tower (shoro) of Daitoku-ji — the great Rinzai Zen temple complex in northern Kyoto — is depicted in this 1964 etching and aquatint, one of Tanaka's earliest known works. Daitoku-ji's bell tower is an austere wooden structure of spare architectural elegance, perfectly suited to Tanaka's sensibility. The aquatint passages suggest the mist and soft light that often envelopes this corner of Kyoto, while etched lines define the tower's structural precision against the surrounding garden.
