Description
Nude Test 2 Bardot belongs to a working series in which Kristensen renders mid-twentieth-century Western pin-up icons through mokuhanga. The subject is Brigitte Bardot, the French actress whose photographic image circulated worldwide from the late 1950s onward; Kristensen's print translates that source from continuous-tone photography into the discrete color planes and keyblock contour of Japanese woodblock. The word "Test" in the title points to the print's status as a trial impression or color state, related to the kyogo-zuri proofs traditionally pulled to evaluate registration and palette before an edition is finalized. The reduction of a photographic nude to flat color fields and outlined silhouette aligns the work with the [bijin-ga](/glossary/bijin-ga) tradition while making its foreign source explicit. Within Kristensen's wider practice, the Nude Test prints operate as a Western counterpart to his Tokyo Tower reframing of Hokusai: a sustained substitution of imported subject matter into a thoroughly Japanese medium.
