Edition period is the primary value driver for Hasui prints. Pre-war lifetime editions with the Watanabe copyright seal (A through D types) consistently achieve 3–5× the price of posthumous reprints of the same design. Condition is the second key factor — unfaded colors, full margins, and absence of foxing or staining are essential. Subject matter (snow > rain > night > other) provides a further modifier within each edition tier.
Namari Spa in Iwate Prefecture, published in 1943, depicts the Namari Onsen hot spring resort in the Hachimantai mountains of Iwate — a remote mountain spa in the geothermally active highlands of northern Honshu, surrounded by beech and birch forest. The Nude tag indicates this composition likely includes a figure bathing at or in the outdoor spa bath rather than a pure landscape, making it one of the few figure-inclusive subjects in Hasui's catalog. The wartime 1943 date and remote Iwate location suggest this was produced during a period when Hasui documented out-of-the-way domestic subjects as urban travel became more restricted.
