Description
This kit includes the five carved blocks used to produce one image alongside a finished impression, documenting the layered process of [nishiki-e](/glossary/nishiki-e) (multi-color) production. Cherry (yamazakura) blocks are typical for their tight, even grain, which holds fine line work without splintering under the [baren](/glossary/baren) during burnishing. A five-block sequence implies a relatively economical palette — likely a keyblock for line plus four color blocks for graded areas — common in the [shin-hanga](/glossary/shin-hanga) and early [sosaku-hanga](/glossary/sosaku-hanga) repertoires. Each block carries [kento](/glossary/kento) registration notches that align successive impressions on the dampened washi. Such complete sets seldom reach the market because production blocks were generally kept by the publisher or worked to exhaustion; their survival here makes legible the carving and printing decisions behind a finished sheet. Tokuriki, whose practice spanned both shin-hanga publisher relationships and the self-carving sosaku-hanga ethos, engaged directly with the blocks throughout his seventy-year career.
