Description
Shuzenji Monogatari — "The Tale of Shuzenji" — is a celebrated kabuki play by Okamoto Kido, first performed in 1909, depicting the final days of the Kamakura shogun Minamoto no Yoriie at the hot spring temple of Shuzenji in Izu. This circa-1954 print depicts a scene or character from this haunting play, which combines historical drama with ghostly atmosphere. Kotondo's late kabuki prints demonstrate his mastery of theatrical subject matter, a heritage as deep in his family as printmaking itself.
