Kotondo is best known for bijin-ga, but his complete oeuvre includes actor prints and other figure subjects. His small corpus of only 21 designs ensures that all authenticated period impressions carry collector interest and scarcity premiums.
From the 1980 posthumous edition "12 Aspects of Women," this print depicts a woman associated with the torii gate — either standing before one, framed by one, or in a setting where the iconic wooden gateway structures the composition. The torii gate marks the boundary between the secular and sacred worlds in Shinto practice, and Kotondo's placement of a woman within or near this threshold gives the subject a quietly ceremonial resonance beyond its visual beauty.
