Lanterns and Maples combines two beloved motifs of Japanese aesthetics -- stone lanterns and crimson autumn leaves -- in a composition of elegant seasonal beauty. Studio editions trade for $300-$1,000, and jizuri impressions with the self-printed seal command $700-$1,800. The autumnal color scheme makes condition particularly important, as reds and oranges are among the first pigments to fade in poorly stored impressions.
Lanterns and Maples is one of Yoshida's most atmospheric autumn compositions, the warm gold and red of maple foliage framing or surrounding traditional stone or paper lanterns to create a quintessentially Japanese seasonal image. The combination of lantern light — soft, warm, traditionally associated with festive and sacred occasions — and the brilliant colors of the autumn canopy represents a meeting of human artifact and natural beauty that runs deep in Japanese aesthetic tradition. Yoshida renders this atmospheric combination with the tonal control that distinguishes his finest work.
