Shirasagi Castle offers another perspective on Himeji's famed White Heron fortress, using the poetic alternative name that evokes the castle's elegant white walls. Studio editions from the Yoshida workshop range from $400-$1,100, with jizuri self-printed impressions reaching $800-$1,800. As one of Toshi's most popular castle subjects, Shirasagi maintains strong and reliable demand at auction throughout the year.
Shirasagi Castle — the "White Heron Castle," another name for Himeji, whose elaborate multi-tower complex rises above the surrounding plains like a great white bird in flight — is depicted here in one of Yoshida's most architecturally splendid Japanese subjects. Whether this title refers to Himeji or to another of the castle complexes known by the white heron name, the subject gave Yoshida the opportunity to engage with the dramatic visual character of Japanese feudal military architecture at its most refined. The castle's white walls, layered roofs, and complex silhouette create a composition of great formal energy.
