A print depicting a scene from the Keian era (1648–52) — a relatively quiet period of Tokugawa consolidation following the dramatic events of the early seventeenth century, when the shogunate's authority was firmly established and the population began to experience the extended peace that would last until the nineteenth century. Chikanobu's Keian era depictions likely show the costume and customs of the mid-seventeenth century court and aristocratic world as reconstructed from historical sources and earlier artistic representations.
