A print depicting a scene from the Kenmu era (1334–36) — the brief period of imperial rule following the overthrow of the Kamakura shogunate by Emperor Go-Daigo, before the Ashikaga shogunate reasserted warrior rule. The Kenmu Restoration was a historically significant but short-lived experiment in direct imperial governance, and Chikanobu's historical series would show the court dress and customs of this transitional moment, when Japan briefly returned to an earlier model of imperial administration.
