A print depicting moon viewing at Ishiyama — the famous temple on the southeastern shore of Lake Biwa in Shiga Prefecture, where the author of the Tale of Genji, Murasaki Shikibu, was said to have experienced the inspiration for her novel while viewing the moon over the lake. Ishiyama's literary associations made it one of the most culturally significant moon-viewing destinations in Japan, and Chikanobu's depiction of the activity there combines the aesthetic tradition of moon viewing with one of the great landmarks of Japanese literary history.
