A numbered print from one of Chikanobu's historical series depicting a scene from the Tenna era (1681–84) — a brief period of the middle Tokugawa shogunate during which the great haiku poet Matsuo Basho was producing his masterworks. The Tenna era's cultural production was considerable: Basho's haiku, the development of the urban popular culture of the pleasure quarters, and the refinement of kabuki theater all characterized this moment. Chikanobu's historical beauty from the Tenna era would be costumed in the characteristic late seventeenth-century dress.
