A print depicting a view from a castle — the elevated perspective from one of Japan's great defensive structures looking out over the surrounding landscape. Castle views carried historical weight in Meiji Japan: the castles themselves were being transformed from feudal military installations to imperial and civic landmarks, and the view from the castle's upper floors combined the aesthetic pleasure of landscape with the historical resonance of the military power the structure represented. Chikanobu's castle-and-landscape compositions honored this dual significance.
