Woman in Boat under Full Moon, dated 1871 and preserved in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, is one of the earliest documented works by Toyohara Chikayoshi and provides important evidence for her activity at the start of the 1870s, in the years immediately following the Meiji Restoration when the Kunichika studio was at its commercial peak. The print depicts a single elegant woman seated within a small pleasure boat that floats across a moonlit expanse of water, her body inclined toward the moon at the upper edge of the composition and her elaborate kimono spilling across the curve of the hull. The image belongs to the late ukiyo-e mood-piece tradition that connected designers from Hiroshige through Yoshitoshi: a single figure isolated within a luminous nocturnal setting, the literary and seasonal associations of moon-viewing (tsukimi) carried by the composition rather than by any explicit narrative content. Chikayoshi handles the subject in a more reserved register than her later actor and topographical prints, with restrained color washes for the water and sky, a clean keyblock drawing of the figure, and the single accent of the full moon as the compositional anchor. The dating to 1871 makes the print contemporary with her teacher Kunichika's most ambitious bijin and actor prints of the early Meiji decade, and it documents Chikayoshi's facility with the quieter literary-mood subjects that ran alongside the more spectacular theatrical commissions in the late Utagawa workshop. The Boston impression is one of the few documented Chikayoshi prints in a major American collection.
