Koitsu's daytime landscapes and non-nocturnal scenes are less common on the primary market but still reflect his mastery of atmosphere and color. Values have risen steadily over the past decade.
The badger (tanuki) occupies a peculiar place in Japanese folklore — a shapeshifting trickster creature associated with good fortune, sake, and mischief, often depicted with an enormous belly used as a drum. Koitsu's treatment in the 1930s brings the creature to life with characteristic warmth, placing the animal in a naturalistic setting that balances the folkloric weight of its subject. This print sits at the edges of Koitsu's usual landscape work, demonstrating his range beyond iconic views.
