Koitsu's atmospheric night and temple scenes are his most sought-after subjects. Doi Hangaten first editions (1930s) are the most desirable; Watanabe editions are more common.
The Gion district of Kyoto held some of Japan's most celebrated cherry blossom viewing, the blossoms of Maruyama Park and the adjacent Yasaka Shrine drawing crowds each spring who came to drink, sing, and admire the flowers by day and lantern light. Koitsu renders the scene at evening, the cherry blossoms glowing white against a darkening sky, figures in kimono moving beneath the branches. The Gion setting adds a layer of refined Kyoto culture to what might otherwise be simply a seasonal landscape.
