Koitsu's daytime landscapes and non-nocturnal scenes are less common on the primary market but still reflect his mastery of atmosphere and color. Values have risen steadily over the past decade.
Nijo Castle in Kyoto, the Tokugawa shogunate's headquarters in the imperial capital, appears in this 1933 version with perhaps greater specificity of architectural detail than Koitsu's later Kyoto treatments. The castle's massive stone walls, wide moat, and tiled rooflines are rendered in a composition that communicates both the structure's physical scale and its historical authority. The 1933 date places this among Koitsu's mature landscape works, when his command of architectural subjects and atmospheric light was fully established.
