Koitsu's atmospheric night and temple scenes are his most sought-after subjects. Doi Hangaten first editions (1930s) are the most desirable; Watanabe editions are more common.
Ukimido — the "Floating Temple" — at Katata on the northwestern shore of Lake Biwa stands on wooden piles in the shallow water, its small hall appearing to float on the lake's surface. The structure became one of the eight classical views of Lake Biwa as codified by medieval poets and painters. Koitsu renders the view under a blanket of snow, the white-roofed hall rising from a snow-covered lake, the grey winter sky pressing low over the water. The image achieves the classical snow-water-sky simplicity that Japanese aesthetic theory most prized.
